ways to improve moodEveryone wants to feel better. In today’s hectic and fast paced life, feeling better usually involves having more energy and an improved mood. The problem is that most of what is being touted as mood or energy enhancers are really anything but. If they even work at all another problem is that they are not natural and can have harmful long-term effects. The good news is that if you are actively looking for a solution to this problem, why not try amino acids? Yes, the supplements you learned about back in school as the building blocks of protein. Take a look at four of the most popular.

Glutamine:

Glutamine is one of the most popular of all amino acid supplements since it helps to reduce fatigue and sadness. Not only does it cause this reduction, but it is also essential for brain function and can be called upon in times of stress to help with the fight or flight response. Supplementation can also help fight off sugar and starch cravings. The proper dose of this is 500 to 1500mg up to three times daily.

Phenylalanine:

Phenylalanine is an essential amino acid due to the fact that it cannot be manufactured within the human body. Phenylalanine produces Tyrosine and directly affects mood and energy. It is also helpful with fatigue, sadness, food cravings and overeating, and chronic pain. There are several different formulations of this supplement (D, L, and DL); all of them may be used effectively. Start out with 500mg one to three times daily and possibly work up to 1000mg one to three times daily.

Tryptophan:

Tryptophan is an essential amino acid which is also a precursor to the powerful neurotransmitter Serotonin. Tryptophan also helps to impart a feeling of calm and relaxation to the body. Low levels of this chemical are often at least part of the reason for things like trouble sleeping, sadness, stress, anger, and strong mood swings. These supplements tend to work quickly and can be used at night before bed, or anytime you are looking for a little help to relax. 500 to 1000mg can be used up to three times daily.

Tyrosine:

Tyrosine is a precursor to a number of different neurotransmitters including Adrenaline, Dopamine, and Noradrenaline. In general, these chemicals all help to promote a balanced and properly functioning nervous system and thyroid. It also, obviously, provides a boost in both energy (Adrenaline) and mood (Dopamine). Some even say that Tyrosine induces a feeling of overall well-being. Start off at 500 mg, up to three times daily.
